Abstract

This paper analyses the contribution of the Andalusian satirical press featuring cartoons to the transition to the industrial press, from 1869, a year marked by constant suspensions of constitutional guarantees, to 1879, when drastic restrictions were introduced by virtue of the enactment of the Printing Law. To this end, the spotlight is placed on El Cencerro (Cordova, 1869) and El Alabardero (Seville, 1879), the two most representative satirical newspapers of the period, so as to determine the effectiveness of their editorial lines for creating a popular press differing from the international kind. Their success lay in the popularisation of radicalism.
