University dropouts are a growing problem in Colombia that worries the Ministry of National Education and society as a whole. Surprisingly, only one in every two students who embark on their higher education journey completes it. Applying Urie Bronfenbrenner's Ecology of Human Development, this study examines the underlying factors of this issue. Through the combination of several sources, this research aims to understand the fundamental causes of student dropout. The study demonstrates that Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Theory is an imperative framework for understanding the underlying causes of early college student dropout and that the analysis of microsystems, mesosystems and exosystems expose several factors that contribute to this problem, in which, The culmination of individual qualities, the academic environment, peer groups and family support influence student dropout. Likewise, the economic situation, the influence of the media and government legislation affect student retention rates. To effectively address college dropout rates, it is crucial to understand the complex and interconnected factors at play. Success in supporting students depends on a comprehensive perspective that takes into account diverse influencers. By adopting this tactic, we can provide more effective support for student achievement. Furthermore, to advance research, research on new intervention techniques and the additional application of ecological theory are necessary.
