Urban transformations in the Istanbul ECHOES Documentary (2016)

Abstract

Documentary cinema appropriates the city, showing its evolution. Instead, fiction films build their scenarios and recreate urban environments. We approach the documentary Istanbul Echoes (2016) by Giulia Frati, which shows the urban transformations of a neighborhood after having undergone a process of modernization, under which urban planners evicted the informal vendors. We reflect on the reconversion of space and the loss of identity.
